"Three camps within a camp"
Camp Takajo is a seven-week, boys' sleep-away camp. Through the years, Takajo has evolved into three distinct groups: Warriors, Juniors, and Seniors. Each group has about 130 campers.
Warrior camp is divided into Crows (boys who have finished 1st and 2nd grades), Braves (finished 3rd grade), and Indians (finished 4th grade). Each group has a program geared to its age level. Our intent is to expose each camper to every activity available at camp in order to stimulate a wide range of interests. By systematically rotating through each of our "hobbies" and "skills" programs, four to five days at a time, each Warrior camper receives an experience for all of the activities the camp offers.
Junior camp is divided into Green (boys who have finished 5th grade) and Grey (finished 6th grade). Junior campers continue with a structured program, but may select their hobbies and skills according to their interests. They rotate these activities about every seven days. Juniors have their own fields and courts, a little larger in size than the Warrior facilities. They also experience slightly longer instructional periods. Juniors have a full slate of intercamp competition, which includes full-participation intercamp and competitive intercamp play. Also, we introduce this age group to regular social events with several regional girls' camps. Junior campers are given the opportunity to go whitewater rafting and participate in the Junior Big Show, which is a musical produced by our Drama staff.
Senior camp is divided into Intermediates (boys who have finished 7th grade), Sub-seniors (finished 8th grade), and Seniors (finished 9th grade). Our senior camp is a "camp of specialization." The program is designed to meet the needs of older boys who begin to express interest in specialty camps. The program offers each camper a chance to concentrate on the activities in which he is most interested and, at the same time, gives him a well-rounded, stimulating program in a traditional, safe environment.
